Less EMO more RAVE?

askrave-head.jpg

Q. I wanna drop my Emo label and Become more new Rave any ideas how?

Magick_x

A. This is quite a tricky ask Heidi as what you are planning is going to take guts! Firstly I should do a whole bla bla bla about how labelling is wrong and we are all individuals bla bla bla... but who am I kidding we all do it and fitting ourselves into a sub-genre helps define who we are.

New rave is all about looking as ludicrous as physically possible and not caring. This can be a bit of a shock to the system if you are not used to it. So I suggest easing your new rave persona in slowly... I have divided your transformation into a few easy steps. How quickly you do this really depends on your self confidence and courage and also whether or not you live in Hackney or Hampshire... I am demonstrating the transformation on the ultimate Emo icon. Emily the Strange, now to be quite honest I don't think she looks very strange, in fact I think she just looks a bit fed up. Lets see what we can do to turn poor sad little Emily into a New rave Riot!

Now begin your transformation with a rave staple. Gold trashy jewellery, just clag on as much as you can, don't be shy. Think Mr T with bells on, or 50cent on a particularly blingy day. I get all my gold chain from B&Q that way I can dangle all sorts of crap from it and it doesn't break. Attach plastic stuff to your chain like old toys, tapes, fake fruit, and whistles... Top it off with one of our NEW apple name necklaces.

Here's where you nip out to TK Max and buy some of the trainers no one else wants, you know the kind. The grotesquely garish egg yolk yellow patent Reeboks left over from 1995; snap them up they are perfect! Wear them with some brightly coloured leggings. At this point you can stop if you like and re-label yourself an EMO RAVER. I wouldn't advise it though, the emo kids will spit at you and the new ravers will just think you bottled out half way.

Next buy one of our AWESOME sweats; a neon slogan can never fail to perk an outfit up.

Ok now you are nearly there! You should already be getting funny looks in the street especially if like me you live outside London. Lets take it to the next level! Get hold of a bright yellow coat, it needn't be yellow just really bright. Buy some really colourful eye shadow and apply all over your face. Outlandish headwear is a must; especially if you don't want to dye your Emo locks a bright colour. So pick up something along the lines of our OWL BAND to doll up that noggin!

askrave4.jpg

The finishing touch has to be a pair of crazy Sunglasses! All of the ones pictured above are available to buy in our sunglasses section! Either go for the classic wayfarer with the lenses taken out or something far more bizarre like some giant cocktail glass shades. Now look at you!

You should look ridiculous but at the same time fabulous, you have transformed from a drab little blackbird into a bird of paradise. Now go outside and see what happens, I did this and an old lady came up to me and gave me a pound (she thought I was collecting for comic relief). Yes people will point and laugh but hey at least they are smiling, the world could do with a bit more fun in it!

Ha ha brilliant! I have a quote realated to this from our friend Mr Jet Storm. Ahem* ....
"The whole neu rave thing is just about looking stupid, having a laugh; as opposed to being a miserable indie kid all I wanna kill myself killy killy slash slash!"

Gemma | March 10, 2007 10:07 PM

I think looking ridiculus is fun, but if i were to go out on the street i would tone it down and go for bright trainers, neon slogan tops and bright eyeshadow and chains. Atlaest then you dont have to have several outfits to look different everyday.

I really like the nu reaver style as it is totally funkadelic, but you shouldnt feel you have to change your style and get someone else tell you how to do it, if your really serious you should just buy up all the nu raver clothes you like and bung them on, then your look will be nu raver and not wannabe nu raver.

BTW i will sooo be buying the awsum top it is amazing!! =]

Ha.
I think thats pretty cool.
To be honest its great to express your style with wacky colors, but the thing is, everyone looks at you as if you have two heads.
Spose' thats the point but I used to dress like it.
I gave it after a while though.
Great site by the way.
^.^

susan | May 1, 2007 4:31 PM

new rave is the new cool :)
i think i'm going for more of a diluted new rave...
bright coloured skinny jeans.
Red.
Yellow.
Orange.
Pink.
Green.
Block colours.

And of course some stylish MASSIVE chain necklaces! ;)

gemstar | May 2, 2007 9:00 PM

alice | May 11, 2007 6:56 PM

heidi seeker | May 11, 2007 7:49 PM

wats the best colors to put in your hair?

Martha | August 9, 2007 9:42 PM

im getting white blonde chunks with a really dark/blackish blue streaked on top of it (y)

Hannah | September 5, 2007 8:40 PM

Hmm I don't know... gold chains seems weird. Go to Wal*Mart and Michael's and all stores that have bright neon pony beads string 'em together make bracelets and necklaces. I get made fun of everydau for going outside looking like a rainbow, but you know, if people have a problem with someone being themselves, they are obviously too insecure about themselves.

Peet | October 20, 2007 12:43 AM

i luv wot u've done, but seriously, i think that it's just so much more believerble in the Emo-Raver change 2 b an emo (so dress in black) and team it up with BRIGHT accessories! That style is called the Colourful Blacks where i'm from.
it looks totally awesome, u can wear it even when ur in a dark uniform and it really really everyday. of coarse it woudn't work if u wanna look outragious. but if u suffer from lack of confidence Colourful Blacks is totally AWESOME!!!!!!!!

also i just thought that chav chains were a bit far for an emo to go.
and they look kind of gross.

BUT THATS ONLY MY OPINION!!!!!!!!

JeSSe | October 20, 2007 9:20 AM

Ravez r bowt goin in wateva u feel comfortable in, n enjoyin yaself it dnt matta wot other ppl fink coz they all dress more or less da same init! phat picz by da way tho ;) x

kristie n sadie | December 6, 2007 11:47 AM

I'm sort of emo raver. Mainly cos I'm all mopey but I wear neon pink faerie dresses and stuff. Yes, I look stupid, but I feel REALLY stupid, so it's ok by me (:
Love HeidiSeeker!

Gabi | March 27, 2008 9:24 PM

Going from emo to rave? This statement alone tells me you are neither.

You are scene. Scene kids are the types that stick to what's "in" while trying to make it seem like it's not.

If that's what you wanna be then go ahead. You won't find it hard to find the things to do so as being 'rave' is a bit generic.

I, however like to stick to things a bit more out of the blue. Such as vintage sailor hats and customized fairy wings of various shapes and sizes. (yes, I do wear them in public and no, I don't care)

Things that other people can't copy me on.
I learned the hard way when the 'emo/scene' thing occured. I had been wearing skinny jeans and black and eyeliner for 3 years(from the age of 12-15) before it became popular. Then just as scene/emo was becoming popular I shifted into what has become the 'rave' scene that was about 2 years ago(I'm nearly 18).
It saddens me that styles I worked hard to find the pieces for have now been made available to anyone, just for the sake of fads and trends.
When people have grown tired of the fluorescent colours, I'll still be donning on my multi-coloured neon converse, some outlandish outfit that'll look like it was put together out of a dress-up box and an authentic vintage bowler hat. Or perhaps my stripy rainbow visor wolly hat covered in transformer badges and spider-man stickers and a badge that says "kid for sale"
Try and label that!

My advice to everyone is: DON'T LABEL YOURSELVES! YOU'RE NOT TINS OF SOUP! If you don't have the self-confidence to dress outrageously, don't do it! I feel self-concious dressing "normal" so everytime a style I've come up with ends up being popular, I have to adapt so I don't feel like a scene kid clone that's fading in the background.

Show some flair and individuality! Make yourselves a tutu from scratch or something. It's more fun than you'd think.

The last non-wannabe | March 30, 2008 7:11 PM

i think the rave thing is kinda gay u cant take anyone dressed like that seriously.....

syko**emo**unleashed>=( | April 3, 2008 9:45 PM

where did those sunglasses come from?!

Blitz | April 7, 2008 3:36 PM

Hey all the sunglasses are in our sunglasses section! xxxx

Heidi Seeker | April 7, 2008 3:43 PM

I totally agree you should be unique , like you said. But you have got to admit that you want to be accepted. so most people go with a type of clothing group. I think.
But i love wearing bright neon colours and looking random (in a good way).

I love heidi seeker!!!

Gemma | April 7, 2008 4:20 PM

The last non-wannabe?
You so totaly rock for that comment. Much love

:D | April 7, 2008 10:01 PM

Ummmm...... why can't you just create your own look, instead of asking people about how they think you should dress. I have some emo clothes, some goth clothes, LOADS of raver clothes and some cute clothes. What i do is just put them all together and create my own unique look. It's the best way to do it!
Be yourself!

Hell no. Not doing whatever the hell you like 'cause of what other people might say sucks.

Soph | July 17, 2008 9:35 AM

cooooollllllllllllllll ! ! ! ! ! ! =) =) =)

jodie | July 21, 2008 11:21 AM

Labels.
Really?
Let people stick to what they want to do.
Did you know that in Germany, theres a law that you can't be emo?
yes, people should be allowed to be what they want, no, people shouldn't label themselves. They don't klnow how pathetic they really look.:'D
I went through a phase of it, (I was 12..) I got out of it, becuase I realized how pathetic it made me look. I love what I wear, how I wear it, and that my stylies have got me noticed everywhere. Why go round being something you're not? I find it amusing.
Toodle.

tamsin | July 25, 2008 9:32 PM

in southern california the rave style is a bit different.
